Photographed along the Nature Trail Loop, Piestewa Peak area, March 2008.

There are a few species with flowers of a very similar shape and color:

Has a very narrow pink rim at base of petals. Leaves have 3 dissected lobes.
California Poppy (E. californica ssp. californica)
Closely related and very similar to the above species, with a very slightly wider pink rim.
Desert Golden-Poppy (Eschscholzia glyptosperma)
No pinkish rim. Leaves are bluish green and divided into many slender lobes.
Poppy Family (Papaveraceae)
